Currently I'm planning on leaving Woodstock on May 21, 2009. I’ll travel through Denver on my way to exploring southern Utah, touching on the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, exploring Idaho, passing through the State of Washington and entering Canada at Abbotsford, BC around June 1st.
In British Columbia, I plan on taking Route 99 (The Sea to Sky Highway) from Vancouver area through Whistler (site of the 2010 Winter Olympics) headed northward. Picking up Route 97 I'll head to Prince George with a planned side trip to Barkerville (a restored gold mining town). At Prince George I'll pick up the Yellowhead Hwy (Route 16) and follow it all the way to Prince Rupert. Next stop will be Stewart, BC. From there I'll cross into Alaska and visit Hyder.
Then I'll take the infamous Cassiar Highway (Route 37) to the Alaska Highway (Route 1) in the Yukon Territory. I'll follow that back into Alaska to Skagway. From Skagway I'll take a ferry to Haines (saving 350 miles of backtracking). I'll reach Valdez, AK by entering back into BC and on through the UT. Then on to Seward and Homer located on the Kenai Peninsula. From there it is on to Denali NP and Mount McKinley. Then to Fairbanks and on to the Arctic Circle via Route 2.
Now I am homeward bound.
First stop is Eagle, AK before heading to Dawson, YK via The Top Of The World Highway (Route 9). Traveling south I'll go through Whitehorse on my way to Dawson Creek, BC. I'll then enter Alberta and head to Jasper & Banff National Parks after which my sojourn in Alaska and Canada will be almost over.
I plan on reentering the lower 48 States at Glacier National Park, continuing on through Yellowstone, the Grand Tetons, on into Red Lodge, Montana (traveling the Beartooth Highway in both directions). Cody, Wyoming is the next stop and then on into the Black Hills region of South Dakota. Then onto home via Chicago. Hopefully I'll arrive home safely some 3 months and 16,000 miles after my May departure.
